How it all began

The Day Sad Lunch Was Born

Every great website has a story.

Some are born in garages.

Some are born in coffee shops.

And some are born from a soggy piece of bread sitting sadly on top of tuna fish.

This is the story of Sad Lunch.

It was an ordinary workday. Like any loving wife, my wife decided to make me lunch before I headed off to work.

She prepared tuna fish.

She found some bread.

And then, in a moment that would forever change both of our lives, she placed the bread on top of the tuna fish.

No container separation.

No protective barrier.

No consideration for the laws of bread physics.

Just tuna.

And bread.

Together.

By lunchtime, the sandwich had undergone a transformation.

The bread was no longer bread.

It had become... soggy bread.

I opened my lunch and stared at it for a moment.

I knew I had two choices:

  1. Eat it and pretend everything was fine.
  2. Tell the truth.

I chose honesty.

Later that day, my wife asked the innocent question:

"How was your lunch?"

I thought about the tuna.

I thought about the bread.

I thought about the moisture that had slowly traveled from one to the other throughout the morning.

And I answered with a single word:

"Sad."

There was a pause.

A very long pause.

And from that day forward...

My wife stopped making me lunch for work.

And so, from the ashes of a soggy sandwich, a dream was born.

A dream dedicated to everyone who has ever opened their lunchbox and thought:

"Well... this is sad."

And that dream became Sad Lunch.

A place to celebrate disappointing sandwiches.

A place to document questionable leftovers.

A place where soggy bread finally gets the recognition it deserves.

Because sometimes lunch isn't good.

Sometimes lunch isn't bad.

Sometimes...

Lunch is just sad.

And that's how Sad Lunch was created.
